Gut Health

Good digestion is not the only benefit of gut health; the overall health depends on it. Trillions of bacteria, both beneficial and toxic, reside in the stomach. The human body consists of 60-90 trillion bacterial cells and around 30 trillion human cells. These taken together constitute our "gut microbiome". It is critical to preserve the microbiome's healthy microbial balance. Your health might be negatively or positively impacted by a variety of factors that can alter its composition and diversity, including genetics, food, exercise, and medicine. Our immunity and mood are only two of the many facets of our wellbeing that are impacted by gut health.

Food is largely broken down and made easier to digest by gut microbes. The distinct gut microbiome of individuals, who live to reach 100 years old, suggests that the gut microbiome may have an impact on longevity. Because each person has a different gut microbiota, items that make one person thrive may irritate another. In addition to digesting, the gut is in charge of the immune system and hormone regulation. More than 70% of immune cells are located in the digestive system.

The gut wall serves as a defence against pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Occasionally this barrier is breached—a condition known as "leaky gut"—allowing these microorganisms to enter the bloodstream and cause illness. The thickness of the lining separating the almost digested food and the blood, is one cell thick only. Mental and gut health are directly correlated. The vagus nerve, which is the longest nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, connects your brain to your neurological system, which can be stimulated by gut microbes. Additionally, gut microbes release mood-regulating neurotransmitters including serotonin. An unhealthy gut can cause a variety of symptoms, including poor sleep, increased fatigue, skin irritation, food intolerances, unintended weight fluctuations and weight gain.

Gut health is significantly influenced by diet. Too much ultra-processed food consumption can result in a homogeneous microbiota. Eating a range of foods high in fibre, such as fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, all of which are rich in fibre, is essential. Fibre is digested by the gut only. Probiotics, which are live active cultures found in yogurt, and prebiotics, which are foods like apples and garlic that feed the healthy bacteria in the stomach, can also help to maintain gut health. A plant based whole food diet helps in increasing the number of good bacteria in the gut.
