Genetically Modified Food

In today’s day and age, with scientific advancement, genetically modified foods have taken the world by a storm. Genetically modified (GM) foods, sometimes referred to as genetically engineered (GE) foods or bioengineered foods, are foods derived from genetically modified seeds through various bioengineering techniques.

Genetically modified foods are created and promoted because it is beneficial to the food's producer. This results in a product that is more affordable, more beneficial (in terms of longevity), or both. With enhanced tolerance to herbicides or resistance to plant diseases brought on by insects or viruses, the main goals of the GM crops now on the market are to increase crop protection. If plant is grown with no competition, they don’t have the required strength. GMo crops are incredibly common in the United States, with at least 90% of soy, wheat and corn grown through genetic techniques.

GMo crops may benefit the grower. Among them are:

● Pest control

● Improved survival and greater yield

Is GMo food unhealthy?

Despite the fact that genetically modified crops greatly simplify farming, there remains uncertainty over their safety for human consumption and their impact on the environment, especially with regard to allergies and diseases.

Some of the potential concerns around GMo consumption include:

● Allergies: Some people are concerned that GMo foods have genes from other foods that could induce an allergic reaction since they contain foreign DNA.

● Cancer: Some people worry that consuming foods containing extra genes may alter their DNA, as cancer is mostly caused due to mutations in DNA.

Despite the fact that the most recent studies indicate that eating GMo crops is safe, some people are worried about possible negative health impacts. Additional study is required because there aren't many long-term human studies.

In India, If the Supreme Court eventually allows the approval, GM mustard will become India’s first GM food crop. The sole additional genetically modified food crop that approached commercialization in India was insect-resistant (Bt) brinjal.
